When the staff at Kapi-Mana specialist school received the green light to build their brand new state of the art facility Mahinawa Specialist School they knew they needed the right interactive technology. After initially meeting them at ULearn 2010, whilst evaluating interactive whiteboard options, Mahinawa partnered with interactive classroom technology firm Manzana.
It was Manzana’s NZ made interactive whiteboard solution 2Touch that caught Mahinawa’s attention. The ability to use finger and pointer control, as well as the customisable options proved the major difference for Mahinawa.
Specialist designs
As part of the project Manzana worked closely with the architects to device a number of specialist installation options to suit the various student needs; one such option was a wheel chair friendly board. The basic design principal was to ensure that students who use wheel chairs could access the board front on – rather than having to wheel side on.
The result was a wooden frame that positioned the board around 300mm off the wall – allowing for the bottom half of wheel chairs to roll under the board and housed all the cabling. The setup also made use of a modified projector bracket that positioned an ultra-short throw projector an extra 300mm off the wall to accommodate for the frame.
Couple of key points from Manzana’s involvement with Mahinawa:
Students & teachers use the 2Touch boards every day
Students use the boards to access resources themselves
Custom sized boards to suit smaller wall space
Worked with architects to design a wheel chair friendly board
Specially designed projector brackets to accommodate the wheel chair friendly board
